Set up and care for noise-cancelling headphones

A careful setup protects both the fit and the information in a later comparison. Start with the instructions for the exact model and retail region; nearby generations can use different apps, controls, included cables or firmware.

Prepare the source device and headset

Confirm the headphone is sufficiently charged, then pair it through the source device or the model's companion app as directed. If the manufacturer offers firmware updates, read its notes and follow the exact update procedure; do not interrupt an update because a different model's guide suggests another route. Check the selected Bluetooth connection mode and codec on both devices if sound quality or latency is central to the purchase. For app-controlled multipoint, configure it deliberately rather than assuming that pairing two devices turns it on. On the WH-1000XM6, the Help Guide says Sony | Sound Connect enables its two-device connection option. Keep a note of what has to be changed if you intend to use several phones or a work computer.

Fit and mode setup

Adjust the headband before listening, and center the cushions around the ears. Try ANC, ambient sound and off modes separately so you can identify the control sequence. If you use an analog cable, test powered listening and power-off playback as distinct cases. Confirm whether the cable disables Bluetooth, the headset microphone or touch controls.

Care and charging

Read the product's water and cleaning warnings. ANC headphones are not automatically sweatproof, washable or safe to charge when damp. The WH-1000XM6 guide explicitly says the model is not waterproof; Sony advises against wet charging. Follow the model's named cleaning materials and avoid solvents unless the maker authorizes them. Keep charging and audio cables separate so you do not mistake a charging-only port for an audio input. Battery capacity changes with age and runtime varies with use. Use manufacturer maximums as a planning reference, not a promise that the battery will always last for a journey. If the battery is important, confirm the exact NC-on rating and whether a powered wired mode still drains the battery.

Recheck after a reset or source change

If pairing or modes behave unexpectedly, consult the model-specific troubleshooting steps and clear only the pairing information you intend to remove. A reset may erase saved devices or settings. If the headphone is damaged, wet, hot or otherwise unsafe, stop using it and contact the manufacturer rather than trying an undocumented repair.
