Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does AirPods Max 1 (Lightning) document Bluetooth ANC and a 20-hour listening rating?
Apple lists Bluetooth 5.0, ANC, and up to 20 hours with ANC or Transparency enabled. The published test conditions used preproduction headphones at 50 percent volume; the maximum is not a promise for a used battery or an individual trip.
Explore this need in the finder →Can AirPods Max 1 (Lightning) take analog audio from a 3.5 mm source?
Yes. Apple documents an optional Lightning-to-3.5 mm Audio Cable for wired analog-source use. It is not among the listed in-box items; Apple's instructions do not confirm ANC during this connection or passive playback with power off.
Explore this need in the finder →Will AirPods Max 1 (Lightning) keep a phone and laptop connected simultaneously?
The Apple material reviewed describes same-account setup and automatic device switching but does not state that two Bluetooth links stay active simultaneously. The model therefore does not satisfy a two-device requirement in the finder; do not infer multipoint from automatic switching.
Explore this need in the finder →Bottom line: AirPods Max 1 (Lightning), model A2096, is Apple’s 2020 over-ear ANC headphone. Apple rates up to 20 hours on its Bluetooth ANC plan and documents a separate optional Lightning-to-3.5 mm analog cable. It does not document ANC runtime or power-off playback for that wired route. This assessment uses primary-source research, not hands-on testing.
First confirm the Lightning generation
Do not treat every “AirPods Max” listing as this model: A2096 is the 2020 Lightning edition, distinct from A3184 (2024 USB-C) and A3454 (2026 Max 2). Apple says the model number is behind the left ear cushion. The 2020 U.S. finish codes are Silver MGYJ3AM/A, Space Gray MGYH3AM/A, Sky Blue MGYL3AM/A, Pink MGYM3AM/A and Green MGYN3AM/A. These historical codes identify a finish, not present stock.
Apple's 2020 five-finish product images
Apple’s unmodified 2020 Newsroom photographs show Silver, Space Gray, Sky Blue, Pink and Green. Silver is open; the other four show the headphones folded in the matching Smart Case. Images identify finish, not current availability or different functions.

Apple’s box list names the Smart Case, Lightning-to-USB-C charging cable and documentation—not the separate Lightning-to-3.5 mm Audio Cable. Confirm that analog lead in the seller’s package; the charging cable is not an audio cable.
What the ANC and 20-hour figure actually describe
Apple lists ANC, Transparency mode, Bluetooth 5.0, H1 chips in both ear cups and up to 20 hours with ANC or Transparency enabled. Its test used preproduction headphones at 50 percent volume, ANC on, Spatial Audio not active, an AAC music playlist and an iPhone 12 Pro Max. Apple warns that settings, environment and use affect battery life. This maximum is neither this review’s measurement nor a used-unit guarantee.
The 20-hour figure is a useful screening number only for Bluetooth ANC; an aged A2096 battery may deliver less. Apple assigns no ANC-on endurance to optional analog listening, so the matcher does not transfer Bluetooth hours to the cable. Apple lists 384.8 g with cushions; personal comfort and pressure require an individual fit check.
Wired analog is not the USB-C digital route
Apple identifies the separate Lightning-to-3.5 mm Audio Cable as the analog-source route for A2096. It can connect to a laptop, in-flight entertainment jack or other 3.5 mm output if the right cable is available. The reviewed instructions do not say whether ANC stays on, rate cable ANC runtime or confirm playback when switched off or depleted. If any of those modes is essential, require explicit documentation for the exact arrangement.
Do not transfer the later USB-C revision’s digital features to A2096. Apple discusses wired lossless and ultra-low-latency audio for A3184 and Max 2, while this Lightning model is documented here for Bluetooth and optional 3.5 mm analog audio. The USB-C end of the charging cable does not make A2096 a USB-C digital headset. See the separate AirPods Max 1 (USB-C) assessment.
Who should consider it—and who should pause
A buyer comparing an earlier Apple headphone may consider A2096 for Bluetooth ANC, the 2020 design or optional analog input. Apple describes automatic setup and switching among supported devices on one Apple Account, but not two simultaneously active Bluetooth links; switching convenience is not a verified multipoint specification.
Apple describes a mesh canopy, adjustable steel frame, pivoting cups and memory-foam cushions. These features do not prove fit for a particular wearer, glasses or long session; weight, pressure, heat and seal need personal evaluation. The gallery identifies all five finishes, with Silver shown open and the remaining photos folded in their Smart Cases.
Checks before buying an older unit
Before buying, confirm A2096, the exact finish, Smart Case, charging cable, cushions and any separately required analog lead. For a used unit, ask about pairing, charging, battery condition, ANC controls, service history, wear and returns; this research did not test a sample or validate its condition. Check that your host offers Bluetooth or a 3.5 mm output with the correct cable. Do not assume A2096 has newer USB-C audio functions or Max 2 processing. Any decision depends on an exact offer and acceptable unit-level battery health, not an unverified price or blanket claim that every wired mode works.
