Apple AirPods Max 2 review

Apple's current over-ear ANC headphones in five U.S. finishes. This source-based assessment distinguishes Bluetooth ANC, USB-C digital audio, and an optional USB-C-to-3.5 mm analog cable; it does not claim personal fit or measured noise reduction.

A useful fit for

A documented fit for someone who wants a current-reference over-ear ANC design, Bluetooth 5.3, Apple's cross-device automatic switching, or a USB-C wired lossless/low-latency route. The product also accepts 3.5 mm analog audio through an extra cable, though this assessment does not match that route to powered ANC or passive playback.

The main tradeoff

At Apple's stated 386.2 g, AirPods Max 2 is much heavier on the specification sheet than the reviewed Sony WH-1000XM6 (254 g) and Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless (about 290 g); those numbers do not predict personal comfort. The 20-hour ANC-enabled figure is an up-to maximum, not a guarantee. Apple documents automatic switching across supported devices on one Apple Account, but the consulted sources do not establish two simultaneous Bluetooth links. The 3.5 mm cable is a separate accessory, and wired ANC/passive behavior is not established here. Several software features require compatible Apple devices and current firmware/software.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I use Active Noise Cancellation while listening over Bluetooth?

Apple documents Bluetooth 5.3, Active Noise Cancellation and controls for switching listening modes on AirPods Max 2. It lists up to 20 hours of listening with ANC enabled, subject to its test conditions. That supports an ANC-required Bluetooth shortlist, but neither the feature list nor Apple's up-to claim predicts how much sound a particular wearer will hear or how long their own charge will last.

Can I connect an analog source such as a seat-back headphone jack?

Apple documents an analog route from a 3.5 mm source using its USB-C-to-3.5 mm Audio Cable. That separate cable is not in the AirPods Max 2 box list. The current support instructions do not say whether ANC remains available over this cable or whether playback continues with the headphone powered off, so do not treat the analog input as proof of either behavior.

Is Apple's 20-hour ANC-enabled rating a guaranteed flight duration?

No. Apple describes up to 20 hours with ANC enabled and publishes a controlled test setup; volume, environment, device settings, usage and other factors can change battery life. Use the number as a published maximum for comparison, allow a margin for the trip, and do not transfer it to the separately documented USB-C or analog routes.

This assessment covers Apple's 2026 AirPods Max 2 in all five U.S. finishes—Midnight (MHWK4AM/A), Starlight (MHWL4AM/A), Blue (MHWM4AM/A), Purple (MHWP4AM/A), and Orange (MHWN4AM/A). Apple publishes a shared model-level specification and support guide for these colors, so they are treated as finish variants rather than five functionally different headphones. This is a source-based comparison, not a hands-on test: fit, comfort, sound preference and personal noise reduction were not measured.

What distinguishes the second-generation model

Apple describes AirPods Max 2 as an over-ear ANC design powered by its H2 headphone chip. Its U.S. technical specification lists Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and other features. Apple's launch release says its ANC is “up to 1.5x more effective” than the previous generation. That remains Apple's comparative claim, not an independent measurement or prediction for a particular wearer.

Some newer functions depend on compatible Apple devices, current firmware and supported software. Apple says Bluetooth can work with non-Apple devices, though functionality may be limited. Check your host before relying on software-led features. Apple's AirPods Max 2 Tech Specs and launch release describe the requirements.

Bluetooth, but not a documented two-link multipoint set

AirPods Max 2 uses Bluetooth 5.3. Apple's setup instructions describe automatic switching among supported Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. That can be useful if you move between an iPhone, Mac and iPad, but the documentation reviewed here does not say that two Bluetooth devices remain connected simultaneously as a general multipoint feature. Automatic switching is not evidence of the two-active-link requirement in this site's finder. If keeping a phone and laptop both connected is essential, compare a model whose manual explicitly documents two concurrent connections, such as the Sony WH-1000XM6, and confirm its setup steps.

Two very different wired routes

The included USB-C cable is more than a charging lead: Apple documents wired USB-C audio, including lossless and ultra-low-latency playback with compatible content, apps, firmware and host software. Apple's newsroom describes 24-bit/48 kHz lossless audio through the included cable. For a Mac with USB-A, Apple's instructions call for a separate USB-C-to-USB-A cable. Apple advises leaving Bluetooth enabled on the connected device for full access to features such as Siri, Spatial Audio and calls. This is a digital route; a charging connector or cable on another headphone does not prove that it can carry audio.

An analog source such as a seat-back 3.5 mm jack uses a different accessory: Apple's USB-C-to-3.5 mm Audio Cable. That cable is not listed in the AirPods Max 2 box contents. Apple's support page confirms the analog connection but does not state whether ANC remains available in that mode, assign it a runtime, or establish passive playback with the headset off. This review therefore does not count the analog route as powered ANC or as battery-free. If either behavior is essential, choose a model with explicit model-specific instructions for it. By contrast, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless documentation separately describes powered cable ANC and passive analog playback, though its exact finish package still needs checking.

Use 20 hours as a ceiling, not a travel promise

Apple lists up to 20 hours of listening on one charge with ANC enabled. Its support footnote describes testing with pre-production AirPods Max 2 paired to an iPhone 17 Pro Max, an AAC playlist of purchased iTunes tracks, volume at 50 percent, ANC enabled and Spatial Audio fixed. The test discharged a full charge until playback stopped. Apple cautions that device settings, environment, usage and other factors affect battery life. The figure is useful for filtering against a minimum, not a guaranteed flight length; leave a margin for calls, volume changes, cold, battery wear or any different configuration. Apple does not publish separate ANC-on runtime figures for USB-C digital audio, analog input, codecs or simultaneous multi-device use, so this assessment does not transfer the 20-hour figure to those paths.

Weight and handling are worth checking before choosing

Apple specifies 386.2 g including the cushions. That is substantially heavier on paper than the reviewed Sony WH-1000XM6 at 254 g or Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless at about 290 g, though weight alone cannot establish personal comfort or pressure. If you expect long work sessions or wear glasses, use exact-model return terms to evaluate fit. Apple says the included Smart Case moves the headphones into an ultra-low-power state.

Exact colors and purchase checks

The Apple U.S. product page shows Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple and Orange as selectable AirPods Max 2 finishes. The matching manufacturer images below show the exact color and its Smart Case; the finish changes appearance, not the documented operating-plan assessment. The official U.S. part numbers are retained so a listing for the original AirPods Max or the earlier USB-C AirPods Max is not mistaken for Max 2.

Before choosing an offer, confirm the Max 2 generation and exact part number; check that your source supports Bluetooth or USB-C audio as needed; budget for the optional analog cable if your device has only a headphone jack; and confirm return terms for fit. No price, stock, seller condition or availability is asserted here.
