Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless (Black) review

Black U.S. MOMENTUM 5 Wireless listing, selected as store SKU 800078 and model M5AEBT. Manufacturer sources describe hybrid adaptive ANC, Bluetooth 5.4 with two active device connections, up to 57 hours of ANC-on Bluetooth playback and a replaceable battery. Passive analog playback is left unresolved because the instruction manual and support FAQ conflict about use with an empty battery.

A useful fit for

A documented fit for someone seeking a current over-ear ANC headset with two active Bluetooth connections, a manufacturer-listed 57-hour ANC-on maximum, digital USB-C audio or a powered analog cable route.

The main tradeoff

The 57-hour figure is a manufacturer maximum under a stated test condition, not guaranteed runtime. The passive-cable instructions conflict: the manual says to use the cable when the battery is empty, while Sennheiser support says the M5 must be powered on and cannot be used passively. This assessment does not certify battery-free playback. The user-replaceable battery also does not make replacement effortless or risk-free.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless stay connected to a phone and laptop at once?

Sennheiser describes two active Bluetooth connections. The manual says the headset reconnects to the last two devices, with audio playing from one source at a time. That is switching, not mixing; Sennheiser’s sources differ on how many device profiles can be stored, so this assessment does not depend on a stored-pairing limit.

Can I keep listening through the M5’s analog cable with the battery empty?

The manual says to use the analog cable when the rechargeable battery is empty, but Sennheiser’s current FAQ says the M5 must be powered on and cannot be used passively. Because these manufacturer instructions conflict, battery-free playback remains unknown here. Do not choose it for an essential powered-off cable requirement; ANC over cable also requires sufficient battery charge.

Is the M5’s published ANC-on runtime enough for a long session?

Sennheiser lists up to 57 hours of Bluetooth playback with ANC on; the manual’s condition is an iPhone at mid volume. The finder can compare a 50-hour minimum rating, but neither that result nor the headline predicts your actual battery life. Leave a charging margin for calls, volume, settings, battery age and travel conditions.

The MOMENTUM 5 Wireless is Sennheiser’s current over-ear Bluetooth ANC model in the manufacturer’s U.S. store. This assessment covers the Black retail listing, store SKU 800078, under the manual’s model designation M5AEBT. It is a source-based comparison, not a hands-on test: comfort, sound preference, call quality and the amount of noise any listener will hear remain unmeasured here.

What the 57-hour figure does—and does not—say

Sennheiser specifies hybrid adaptive active noise cancellation and up to 57 hours of Bluetooth music playback with ANC enabled. The instruction manual states its test condition as an iPhone at mid volume. Treat that number as a manufacturer maximum under the stated setup, not a trip guarantee: volume, calls, connection choices, surroundings, battery age and use can change actual time. The product page compares ANC systems with the MOMENTUM 4, but its promotional comparison is not an independent measurement or a promise of a particular reduction for your ears.

The M5 uses a 42 mm dynamic driver, has a replaceable rechargeable 700 mAh battery, weighs approximately 290 g and takes about two hours for a full charge according to its manual. Its replaceable battery is a meaningful serviceability distinction from the M4’s built-in battery, although replacement still means following the manufacturer’s procedure and using a compatible part. Bluetooth is version 5.4; the manual lists SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Lossless and aptX Adaptive. A transmitting phone or computer must also support a chosen codec, so the headphone’s codec list alone does not promise that a source will use one.

Two-device switching, not two streams at once

The manual says the headphones try to reconnect to the last two Bluetooth devices and can play audio from only one at a time. Sennheiser’s setup guidance also describes multipoint with two active devices. That is useful for a phone-and-computer routine when the person wearing them changes which device is playing; it is not a mixer for two simultaneous music streams. Sennheiser’s public support material differs on the number of saved pairings: the manual says up to six stored profiles, while the current “Before You Start” answers a question about stored devices with a two-device figure. This assessment keeps the simultaneous two-device capability, which both describe, and does not rely on a maximum stored-pairing count.

Other source-dependent features include the Smart Control Plus app, transparency mode, Dolby Atmos spatial audio and head tracking. Atmos can be switched off for ordinary stereo playback. The app is relevant if you want sound personalization or to manage connected devices, so consider whether app setup fits your routine rather than assuming every feature is available from a button alone.

Wired options and an important power caveat

The box list includes a 2.5 mm-to-3.5 mm analog audio cable and a USB-C charging cable that the documentation also supports for computer or mobile audio. Connecting the analog cable disables Bluetooth. The manual says ANC can be used over the analog cable when the battery is sufficiently charged; the manufacturer FAQ says the M5 must be powered on for analog input and cannot be used passively. But the manual also says to use the analog cable when the rechargeable battery is empty. Those manufacturer statements do not agree. For this reason the exact fact record leaves passive, powered-off playback unresolved and the finder does not match the M5 to a battery-free cable requirement. If analog playback with no battery power is essential, choose a model whose exact documentation explicitly supports it instead of treating the M5’s cable as proof.

USB-C audio is a separate digital route, not just the charging function, but the host must provide compatible audio output and a suitable data cable. Neither that route nor an analog cable changes the Bluetooth battery rating. If you need ANC while cabled, plan to keep the headset powered and charged.

Where it sits beside the MOMENTUM 4

The M5 and M4 are related around-ear models, not interchangeable listings. Sennheiser’s current product comparison identifies eight ANC microphones on M5 versus four on M4, user-replaceable versus built-in batteries, Bluetooth 5.4 versus 5.2, Dolby Atmos on M5, and maximum ANC-on Bluetooth ratings of 57 and 60 hours respectively. The M5 is the newer feature set, while the M4’s longer listed maximum and better-documented passive cable route matter to a different set of priorities. Neither microphone count nor a company comparison establishes that one will sound quieter to every wearer.

The M5 package list names the headphones, carrying case, USB-C-to-USB-C charging cable, analog cable, quick guide, safety guide and compliance sheet. It does not list the two-prong in-flight adapter included with the M4. A traveler should check the exact box and source connector they need; do not assume the same accessories are supplied across generations or BTD 700 bundles.

Check the exact listing before choosing

Confirm Black and store SKU 800078 rather than treating an unspecified finish or a MOMENTUM 5 plus BTD 700 set as the same retail package. Check the return policy for fit and comfort, the host’s Bluetooth or USB-C audio compatibility, and whether app setup is acceptable. If your deciding requirement is passive audio after power-off, the conflicting manual and FAQ make the M5 an uncertain choice; this review does not certify that mode. If the 57-hour rating matters, compare your planned listening stretch with the maker’s maximum and allow a margin rather than expecting exactly 57 hours.
