Sony ULT WEAR (Black) review

A current U.S. black WH-ULT900N/B over-ear ANC headphone with a three-position bass control, codec-specific Bluetooth battery ratings, two-device multipoint, and distinct powered and passive 3.5 mm cable modes. Sony also lists a serial-range-specific service program; no individual unit’s serial status is known.

A useful fit for

A documented fit for someone who wants an over-ear ANC headphone with selectable bass emphasis, two-device Bluetooth switching in AAC/SBC, or a 3.5 mm path that can be powered for ANC or used passively without power.

The main tradeoff

Bluetooth ANC is rated up to 30 hours with AAC/SBC and 25 with LDAC; two-device multipoint disables LDAC. Powered wired ANC is rated up to 30 hours, but passive power-off cable playback has no ANC. The 255 g listed weight, individual comfort, ANC effect, and serial/service eligibility need separate consideration.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I keep a phone and computer connected while using LDAC?

ULT WEAR supports two Bluetooth connections when multipoint is enabled in Sony’s app, and playback switches between the two devices rather than mixing. Sony says LDAC cannot be used in that arrangement; the connection switches to AAC or SBC. The 30-hour maximum ANC-on music rating applies to AAC/SBC, while Sony lists 25 hours for LDAC ANC-on playback in its separate codec arrangement.

Can the supplied analog cable retain noise cancellation?

Yes, if the headset remains powered on. Sony’s Help Guide says ANC or Ambient Sound can remain active through the supplied cable; Bluetooth and the ULT bass button are unavailable in cable mode. Sony lists up to 30 hours for powered cable listening with ANC on, subject to conditions and settings.

Can I still listen if the battery is empty?

Sony documents playback from the supplied 3.5 mm cable with the headset powered off. That passive route uses no headset battery, but has no ANC or ULT button effect. It should not be treated as battery-free ANC.

Sony · current U.S. configuration · Black WH-ULT900N/B

The ULT WEAR is an over-ear wireless noise-cancelling headphone with a bass-control button and supplied analog cable. Its modes interact: Bluetooth, powered cable listening, and passive cable playback are not interchangeable. This assessment uses Sony’s product, specification, and Help Guide material; it does not claim hands-on listening, fit, or cancellation testing.

A bass switch with three defined settings

Sony documents the ULT button as a cycle through ULT1, ULT2, and Off. ULT1 emphasizes deep bass; ULT2 emphasizes a more powerful presentation than ULT1. Those are tonal adjustments, not evidence that every recording or listener will benefit from extra low end. The app can also change the mode, and Sony notes that a high Clear Bass setting can make the ULT2 effect harder to obtain. A practical setup is to treat the button as an optional sound preference and leave it off when the source, mix, or listening situation calls for a less bass-emphasized balance.

The ULT control is not a wired-use feature: Sony says it cannot be used while the supplied cable is connected. That makes the bass modes most relevant to Bluetooth listening. Sony also lists the Equalizer, DSEE, voice-assistant, Service Link, and ULT settings among features that can reduce battery life from the stated maxima. The headline endurance number therefore should not be read as a guarantee for every combination of settings.

ANC and fit are separate questions from the feature list

The WH-ULT900N has a noise-cancelling mode and an Ambient Sound mode, selectable from the headset or Sony’s companion app. The manufacturer describes dual noise sensors and its V1 processor, but a processor name does not establish how much of a particular person’s commute, office, voices, or sudden sounds will disappear. Sony’s wearing instructions make the seal and position explicit: extend the slider, seat the pads around the ears, then adjust the cups. A poor position may weaken cancellation or affect wear detection. Shoppers who need a particular level of quiet should not infer it from the presence of ANC or from a marketing phrase.

At about 255 g, this is not the same weight class as Sony’s 192 g WH-CH720N. That is a documented difference worth weighing if carrying mass matters; it does not predict individual comfort. Both are over-ear ANC models, but their battery and codec specifications differ too.

Battery ratings depend on codec and connection

Sony’s music-playback figures are maximums from a fully charged battery. On Bluetooth with ANC active, the listed maximum is 30 hours with AAC or SBC and 25 hours with LDAC. With ANC off, the listed figures are 50 hours for AAC/SBC and 40 hours for LDAC. The supplied cable with the headset powered on has a separate maximum of 30 hours with ANC active or 50 with ANC off. Settings and use conditions can shorten these figures.

The codec caveat matters for people who also want multipoint. Sony allows two Bluetooth devices to remain connected after enabling the option in its app, so playback can be switched between a phone and computer without reconnecting. It does not mix two music streams. When two-device multipoint is enabled, however, LDAC cannot be used; the connection switches to AAC or SBC. So the 30-hour AAC/SBC ANC figure is the relevant cited maximum for a two-device setup, while the 25-hour LDAC ANC figure belongs to the separate one-device high-quality-codec arrangement. Sony’s WH-CH720N offers two-device switching too, but its listed Bluetooth codecs are SBC and AAC and its ANC-on music figure is up to 35 hours. That is a specification comparison, not a claim about sound or cancellation superiority.

What the cable does—and does not do

The included 3.5 mm cable offers two useful but distinct routes. With the headset powered on, Sony says ANC or Ambient Sound can remain available and Bluetooth turns off. With the headset powered off, audio can continue passively, but noise cancellation and the ULT button are unavailable. The passive route is the sensible contingency if the battery is empty; it is not a battery-free way to retain ANC. Sony recommends using the supplied cable and inserting it fully. The manual also directs volume and playback operations to the connected source in cable mode.

The package specification lists a Connection Cable, USB Cable, Warranty Card, and Reference Guide. Check an individual offer for the exact U.S. black WH-ULT900N/B configuration and verify that the cable is present if wired use is important. The USB cable is listed as a charging accessory; Sony’s cited audio instructions describe Bluetooth or the 3.5 mm headphone cable, not USB audio.

A model-specific service-program check is essential

Sony has published a service program for certain WH-ULT900N units because cracks may develop at the rotating joint between the headband and earcup housing. For Black units, the stated serial range is 1000001–1164062; the program identifies model mark YY2981 and says affected units can receive free service through January 31, 2027, subject to the product Limited Warranty terms. This is a limited serial-number program, not a statement that every ULT WEAR is affected or a blanket recall clearance. Before buying used or from a seller with uncertain provenance, ask for the serial number and consult Sony if it falls in that range; inspect the joint and confirm current service eligibility with Sony. A page-level review cannot identify an individual unit’s serial number or condition.

Consider the ULT WEAR when its bass options, app-based two-device connection, and both 3.5 mm routes fit your setup. Check codec-specific runtime, that cable ANC requires power, and the serial-specific service notice. Its feature list cannot answer personal questions of sound preference, seal, comfort, or actual noise reduction; confirm fit and a suitable return option.
