Sony WH-CH730N (Black) review

A current US black WH-CH730N/B over-ear ANC headset. Sony documents two-device Bluetooth multipoint, a supplied 3.5 mm cable for powered ANC or passive power-off listening, and codec-dependent rated playback; none of those specifications establishes personal fit or comparative cancellation performance.

A useful fit for

A useful documented fit for someone seeking a relatively light over-ear ANC headset with long Bluetooth playback ratings, two-device switching, and both powered and passive analog-cable routes.

The main tradeoff

ANC and runtime depend on the operating mode and codec: Sony rates ANC-on playback at up to 50 hours with AAC/SBC and 45 with LC3, while powered wired ANC has a 35-hour maximum. Passive cable listening works without power but has no ANC, and fit or cancellation quality has not been measured here.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I keep this headset connected to a phone and a computer at once?

Yes. Sony's Help Guide documents simultaneous Bluetooth connection to two devices and switching playback between them without reconnecting. It plays one device's audio at a time rather than mixing streams; if you add a third device, one of the existing connections is displaced.

Can I listen through a cable and keep ANC on?

Yes, with the headset powered on. Sony documents a supplied 3.5 mm connection cable for analog listening with noise cancellation or Ambient Sound active and gives up to 35 hours for that powered wired mode. The ANC-on rating is a manufacturer maximum, not a guaranteed session length.

Will the cable still play if the headset runs out of battery?

Sony documents passive audio from the supplied 3.5 mm cable with the headset switched off. Bluetooth and ANC are unavailable in that arrangement, and the headset's volume/playback buttons do not work while the cable is connected, so operate playback on the source device.

This assessment covers the US black WH-CH730N/B, not a hands-on listening test. Sony also lists a white WH-CH730N/W; the available US evidence treats it as a color configuration of the same model, so this review's functional findings apply to both finishes. The photo and exact retail code shown here are black.

Noise cancellation is a mode, not a promise of silence

Sony describes two microphones in each earcup as part of its Dual Noise Sensor system and offers an Ambient Sound mode with adjustments through Sony | Sound Connect. The Help Guide is more useful than the headline: cancellation is aimed mainly at lower-frequency sounds such as traffic and air conditioning, is not complete cancellation, and can vary with the sound and how the cups sit. Do not read the feature name as a guarantee against voices, announcements, or every cabin noise. A loose seal, hair or glasses under an ear pad, and your own sensitivity all matter; there is no measured attenuation or personal fit result in this assessment. Fit guidance is practical rather than a universal comfort verdict. Sony tells users to extend the slider, then adjust the headband and rotate the units until the pads sit snugly around the ears. That can improve the intended seal, but it cannot establish whether clamping feel, pad shape, heat, or headband pressure will suit you. Listed weight is about 207 g; it does not prove individual comfort.

The 3.5 mm cable has two distinct jobs

Sony lists a detachable stereo-mini-jack input and includes a connection cable for the US model. With the headset switched on, the cable carries analog audio while noise cancellation or Ambient Sound mode remains available. The guide gives up to 35 hours for powered cable listening with noise cancellation active, or up to 40 hours with those sound modes inactive. These are manufacturer maximums, not a promise for a particular use pattern. The fallback is different: Sony documents passive listening with the headset switched off. Wired audio can continue when the battery is exhausted, but Bluetooth and ANC are then unavailable. The onboard volume and playback buttons also do not work in cable mode, so controls move to the connected player. The analog cable does not make the USB-C charging socket a digital audio input; Sony's documents do not establish USB audio. Check the source device's output and any adapter before relying on wired listening.

Two-device Bluetooth connection, one active music source

The WH-CH730N can remain connected to two Bluetooth devices at once. Sony's guide describes pairing each device, connecting them in turn, and switching playback between them without reconnecting. This is useful for a phone and computer, but it is not two-stream mixing: one device plays at a time. A third connection displaces one of the two current connections. Call handling across two phones has its own behavior, so check the guide if simultaneous calls matter. Sony's US specification lists Bluetooth 6.0 and SBC, AAC, and LC3 audio codecs. The time rating changes with codec: Sony lists up to 50 hours with noise cancellation on over AAC or SBC, and up to 45 hours over LC3; with cancellation off, the corresponding figures are 75 and 70 hours. The shorter LC3 figure is a useful planning value if you do not know which supported codec a host will use. Bluetooth behavior and codec availability still depend on the connected device and settings.

Long published runtime, with ordinary limits

The US support specification gives an approximate three-hour charge time. Sony's Help Guide lists about 60 minutes of music after three minutes charging, but Equalizer, DSEE, Service Link, and other app changes can shorten the stated time. Compare the relevant codec and mode with your itinerary and leave a margin for calls, battery age, and interruptions rather than planning to the maximum. For context, Sony's published XM6 figure is up to 30 hours with cancellation on and its listed weight is about 254 g; the CH730N figures are up to 50 hours on AAC/SBC (45 on LC3) and about 207 g. That is a comparison of manufacturer specifications, not a listening or noise-cancellation test. It does not establish that the lighter headset cancels more noise, sounds better, or fits more comfortably than the more expensive model.

Ownership checks that matter

This is not a water-resistant headset. Sony warns that rain, sweat, or charging while wet can cause malfunction, and describes the ear pads as consumables. Wipe and store it according to the guide rather than treating it as workout gear. Sony's US box list names the connection cable, warranty card, and reference guide; check the exact seller package for any charging lead or power adapter you expect, instead of assuming they are included. Color names, available packages, seller terms, and availability can change, so match the listing to WH-CH730N/B for black or WH-CH730N/W for white.

Who should keep it on a shortlist?

It is a documented fit for someone who wants over-ear active noise cancellation, a light listed weight, long rated Bluetooth playback, two-device connection, and both powered and passive 3.5 mm listening routes. It is less suitable if you need ANC with the headset switched off, USB digital audio, a promise of all-day personal comfort, or a measured result for a particular kind of noise. This is source-based product analysis, not a claim of ownership, testing, or customer experience; use the operating plan and exact-package checks above to decide whether those documented capabilities match your routine.
