Focal Bathys (Deep Black) review

A current-reference closed-back over-ear ANC headphone with Bluetooth 5.1 multipoint, 3.5 mm analog and USB-C DAC routes. Focal rates Bluetooth ANC playback up to 30 hours; the Jack and USB figures are not transferred to that plan.

A useful fit for

A documented fit for a current-reference buyer who wants over-ear ANC, a Bluetooth link that can keep two devices connected, and separate analog and USB-C audio routes. Its specific 30-hour ceiling belongs to Bluetooth ANC playback, not a general all-mode battery promise.

The main tradeoff

The 350 g published mass and battery-dependent wired operation deserve attention: Focal says the Jack route requires the switch ON, so it is not a passive empty-battery backup. The manual does not explicitly confirm ANC on the Jack route, and the manufacturer gives conflicting 40/42-hour USB-DAC figures without tying either to ANC-on operation.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can Bathys keep my phone and computer connected at once?

Focal's FAQ says two devices can be connected simultaneously and describes multipoint switching. Only one source plays at a time; it does not mix phone and computer audio.

Can I keep listening through the Jack cable after its battery is empty?

No. Focal's manual requires the switch to be ON for Jack operation, and the product FAQ says the headphone needs power for any operation. The cable route is not a passive battery-free fallback.

Does its 30-hour rating cover a long Bluetooth ANC session?

Focal rates Bluetooth with noise cancelling at up to 30 hours. That is a manufacturer maximum for that arrangement; it is not an actual runtime prediction for a particular unit, and the different Jack/USB modes do not inherit that ANC-on figure.

This is a source-led assessment of the Focal Bathys, not a hands-on listening or comfort test. It is a current-reference, closed-back over-ear ANC headphone with several distinct listening paths. The strongest reason to shortlist it is that Focal documents Bluetooth ANC, a 3.5 mm cable and USB-C DAC audio in one model. The caution is equally specific: wired paths do not inherit the Bluetooth runtime figure, and the analog route is not a documented battery-free fallback.

What the Bathys is—and is not—documented to do

Focal describes the Bathys as an over-ear closed headphone with active noise cancellation. The controls offer Silent, Soft and Transparent modes; Focal describes the first two as different noise-control settings and the third as a way to hear the environment. That tells a buyer which functions exist, not how many decibels disappear in a commute, how well voices are reduced, or whether the physical seal will suit a particular head. No attenuation measurement or comparative listening test is claimed here. The manufacturer lists a 40 mm Aluminium-Magnesium M-shaped driver. That is a useful identity marker, especially because the newer Bathys MG is a separate model with magnesium drivers, not merely another Bathys color. The product page lists the Bathys in Deep Black and Dune; the reviewed hero image and exact reference SKU here are Deep Black, FOAHALNOMB0B800. Dune's listed finish SKU, FOAHALNOMB0G500, remains a separate catalogue entry rather than being silently relabeled as Black. Focal's Dune launch article also shows that finish directly:

Bluetooth switching is more than a pairing list

The Bathys uses Bluetooth 5.1 Multipoint and lists SBC, AAC, aptX and aptX Adaptive. Focal says two devices can be connected at once, while its FAQ describes automatic switching between sources. That is useful for keeping a phone and computer ready, but it is not a promise that two streams play together. The same FAQ says only one device plays at a time. Codec availability also depends on the source device, so an aptX label on the headphone does not establish what a particular phone or laptop will negotiate. Focal's published ceiling is up to 30 hours for Bluetooth with ANC. Treat that as a manufacturer maximum for the named arrangement, not an estimate of a used unit's current battery or a guarantee for every volume, call pattern, codec or setting. The page also lists fast charging—five additional listening hours from 15 minutes—and an approximately 1.5-hour full charge with a suitable supply. The power adapter is not listed as included.

Three routes, three different questions

The included 1.2 m 3.5 mm cable makes the Bathys a plausible choice when a source has a headphone output. Focal lists 35 hours in Jack mode, but its manual says the switch must be ON for Jack playback. When the cable is inserted, Bluetooth disconnects. The manual does not explicitly tie ANC operation or an ANC-on rating to that Jack arrangement, so this assessment leaves those plan details unknown. Do not treat the 35-hour Jack figure as 35 hours of ANC-on cable listening, or as playback after the battery is empty. USB-C is a different wired route: Focal describes USB-DAC audio up to 24-bit/192 kHz, and the manual says active noise cancellation can operate in DAC position while the battery remains charged. There is a real documentation conflict on USB duration: the specification table lists 42 hours in USB-DAC mode, while the model-page FAQ says 40. Neither is clearly presented as ANC-on runtime. The fair reading is that USB audio and DAC-mode ANC are documented, but a single reconciled USB runtime is not. Focal also notes that iPhone hosts may need an OTG adapter and that calls are unavailable on iOS in USB-DAC mode.

Fit, materials and travel checks

The listed mass is 350 g, a number worth comparing if long sessions are part of the plan. Focal describes real leather and microfibre in the headband, replaceable ear pads and a supplied rigid case. Those details help identify the package, but they do not predict pressure, warmth, glasses compatibility or headband comfort. If fit uncertainty matters, check return terms before buying rather than treating a material description as a wear test. The manufacturer lists a case, 3.5 mm cable, USB-C cable and Quick Start material. Confirm that the exact seller's package includes them, especially on an open-box or used offer. Also check whether the source device supports USB audio and, for a phone, whether its adapter and call limitations fit the intended setup. Battery condition matters for all the powered routes: a cable does not turn this model into a passive headphone.

Who should compare it with the MG version?

Compare this Bathys with the Bathys MG assessment if driver material and Bluetooth generation matter. The MG page lists magnesium drivers and Bluetooth 5.2, while this model uses Aluminium-Magnesium drivers and Bluetooth 5.1. Both share the published 30-hour Bluetooth ANC maximum, 350 g mass and separate Jack/USB-DAC routes. Those are specification contrasts, not proof that the newer or more costly-looking variant sounds better, cancels more noise, or fits better. The Bathys is easiest to justify on a checklist built around Bluetooth ANC, two-device switching, and the option to use USB-DAC or powered analog audio. It is a weaker match for someone who needs passive playback after battery depletion, a confirmed ANC-on analog cable rating, or a settled USB-DAC runtime. Read the Focal Bathys product page, model manual and product sheet for the exact mode and package wording; then check the exact finish, seller condition, battery and return terms.
